The French Mixed Open Touch Rugby team wins gold at the 2025 European Opens Cup
September 9, 2025
Looking back on this wonderful adventure with Charline Montagnat, member of the French team and Application Manager at Sully.
Charline, you play Touch and work at Sully Group. Can you tell us more about that?
Yes, I have been playing Touch Rugby for 13 years, and I joined Sully Group in 2020 as Applications Manager. Touch is an amateur sport, and Sully Group has been supporting the French Mixed Open (MXO) team for four years now!
You've just returned from Calvisano, Italy, where you took part in the European Opens Cup with the French Mixed Open team. How did you find this new sporting and human adventure?
It was a wonderful experience, both on and off the field. The atmosphere was fantastic, and the four days of competition flew by.
This competition marked the beginning of a new cycle for the team. Can you explain what motivated this renewal?
Work with the staff and players is carried out in cycles of two to four years. This year, a large part of the team and staff has been renewed to start a new chapter.
How did you prepare for this competition?
We took part in four training camps throughout the year, each lasting a weekend. This gave us the opportunity to establish our playing system, work on combinations, play matches, and also bond as a team off the field.
How did the matches go on the field? Were you able to implement your strategy?
There were six teams in our category: Belgium, Switzerland, Lebanon, Middle East, and Italy. We were lucky enough to play the opening match of the competition against Italy, which was a great moment, but still a little stressful! As the matches progressed, we were able to improve our game, right up to the final against Belgium, where we played well. Of course, we still have work to do to improve in various areas, but the foundations are there.
There were no Anglo-Saxon teams this year, but we look forward to seeing them again next year to compete at the highest European level.
Were you able to take advantage of your time there to do some sightseeing in Italy?
Unfortunately not, maybe next time! 😉
Can you tell us a little more about Touch, a sport that is still relatively unknown in France?
Touch Rugby originated in Australia around sixty years ago and is now the most popular sport in that country. It is a derivative of rugby league, with very specific rules. It arrived in France in 2001 and now has 88 clubs across the country (around 3,000 licensed players, which is 100 times fewer than rugby...). It is a sport that is accessible to everyone, regardless of gender or size, and it has the unique feature of being able to be played in mixed teams, which I find extraordinary!
